Penelope’s Perfect Rainbow Princess Bedroom
I can think of two ways to approach designing a princess bedroom. The first is to go all-in on a playful Disney character theme, with bold colors, wall decals, and themed bedding. The other is to create an elegant space fit for royalty.
Neither approach is better. It all depends on the style you’re after and the overall feel of your home. We captured the essence of a princess room: whimsical, graceful, and charming. All while keeping it cohesive with the rest of the family’s home.
Heang, Penelope’s mom, is a friend who has invited me to help makeover her home, room by room. So far, we’ve done her office, dining room, powder bath, and kids’ rooms. Today, we’re walking through Penelope’s gorgeous princess bedroom.
This home was originally owned by Penelope’s grandparents and was the house her father grew up in. It was important to Heang that we make Ada’s bedroom feel like a room fit for a princess, and I was thrilled to help her dream come true!

Starting with the Basics
The first thing we did in Penelope’s room was install new flooring. The wood floors weren’t in great condition, so we added beautiful faux wood flooring that was easy to install. I really gave the room a calm, neutral feel.
Once the flooring was in, I moved on to adding molding to the walls. I chose a type of molding called picture frame molding, and it is so easy to install. Check out this blog post here to learn more about installing molding, or this TikTok video to see how I installed it in Penelope’s room.
Once the trim was up, my daughter came in and helped me paint all of the trim and the bottom half of the trim wall a nice, clean shade of white. The rest of the walls got a couple of coats of this gorgeous princess pink color.

A Cozy Place to Sleep
Is there anything more princessy than a bed canopy? It instantly transforms any space into a dreamy, princess-worthy retreat. The flowing fabric creates a sense of elegance and charm while also adding a touch of privacy. Beyond its fairytale appeal, a canopy makes the bed feel extra cozy, turning it into a snug and inviting hideaway.
We opted for a daybed in this space, and I love it. It opens up valuable floor space, making the room feel larger and more functional. My daughter loved this bed so much that we added a daybed to her room as well. This room was very inspirational during Arden’s room redesign.

The Perfect Touches for a Rainbow Princess Bedroom
Since this is a rainbow princess room, we wanted the bedding to tie the theme together in a playful way. We opted for this adorable rainbow bedding, which adds a burst of cheerful color while still feeling soft and whimsical. It’s the perfect complement to the princess details in the space, creating a room that feels both bright and enchanting.
This round, pink oriental-style rug feels very classic in this space. It also grounds the room with its soft color and timeless pattern. It makes the room feel cozy and complete. and is the perfect foundation for creative playtime on the floor.
No little girl’s princess room is complete without a sparkling crystal chandelier. The delicate shimmer of the crystals adds instant magic, casting beautiful light and creating a fairytale atmosphere. It really elevates the space from simply pretty to truly enchanting.

A Moment of Silence for this Chair
We can go no further without mentioning this hanging hammock chair—it’s truly a standout feature in the room. Not only does it add a fun, whimsical vibe, but it also creates a cozy nook for reading, relaxing, or daydreaming. This is another thing my daughter loved so much, we hung one in her own room.
Little elements like this are so simple to add, yet they make the room feel completely unique and special. Thoughtful touches like a whimsical chair, a sparkling light, or a playful rug come together to create a space full of personality and charm.
The rainbow lamp in the image above is no longer sold at Pottery Barn Kids, but I included a link for a similar lamp you can find on Amazon.
