Demetri’s Designer Boys Bedroom Makeover

| |

I love designing kids rooms, and designing this space was no exception. Demetri’s parents put a lot of faith in my design skills. They opted to purchase furniture and decor brand new, rather than my typcial thrift-heavy desings. This is a true designer boys bedroom makeover and I am so excited to show you how it turned out. So if thrifting isn’t really your style, this makeover is the perfect example of how you can achieve a thoughtful, stylish, and functional design without spending weekends hunting for vintage pieces.

The Mood Board

I always begin every project with a mood board because it sets the tone and direction for the entire design. A mood board helps me visualize how colors, textures, furniture, and accessories will work together before I start sourcing pieces. It creates a strong foundation, ensuring that every choice — from the bedding to the wall art — ties back together. For me, it’s like a roadmap that keeps the design process focused and intentional from start to finish.

Your mood board doesn’t have to be anything fancy — it can simply be a collection of photos that capture the look and feel you’re going for. The goal is to help you see the complete vision of your space before you start shopping or decorating. I like to put mine together in Canva because it’s quick, easy, and lets me play around with different ideas until everything feels just right.

From Cookie Cutter to Boys Room Stunner

Demetri’s family lives in a beautiful new build home, complete with modern touches like a sleek slatted wall and high-quality carpeting. While those features gave the room a polished starting point, what it really lacked was that glimpse into Demetri’s personality — the kind of playful, personal details that transform a standard bedroom into a space that feels truly his. A kid’s room should always reflect who they are, and bringing in those elements was the key to making this design special.

Floor to Ceiling

This room has wonderfully high ceilings, which is a great feature, but it can sometimes make a space feel a little too open or empty — especially in a child’s bedroom. To create a sense of warmth and coziness, it’s important to incorporate strong design elements that draw the eye upward and connect the room from floor to ceiling. By carrying patterns, textures, or bold accents all the way up, the height feels intentional and inviting rather than overwhelming, giving the space both balance and personality.

One of the most effective ways I addressed the tall ceilings in this room was by adding grand curtains that stretched all the way from floor to ceiling. If I had used shorter curtains, the wall space above the window would have looked too expansive and disconnected, emphasizing the height in a way that felt stark instead of welcoming.

Another floor-to-ceiling element that really transformed the space is the stunning navy blue wallpaper. I purchased the wallpaper at US Wall Decor and was really pleased with the quality. Treating the wall behind the bed with this dark blue paper really grounds the bed in the space. I love the sense of depth and drama it adds in what could have otherwise felt like a simple, laid-back room.

Making it Personal

In any good designer boys bedroom makeover, it’s essential to weave in personal elements that reflect the child who lives there. The last thing we want is for Demetri to grow up in a space that feels cold or generic, like a hotel room. At the same time, it’s also important to his parents that his bedroom still blends seamlessly with the overall style of the family’s beautiful home. I think we struck a nice balance — a room that feels uniquely his, while still fitting effortlessly into the design story of the rest of the house.

Demetri loves basketball, but the traditional neon colored hoop wasn’t going to cut it for the style of this room. So we found this stunning white and gold hoop at Pottery Barn Teen.

On the bed, I included some throw pillows that go beautifully with the color scheme in the room, but still show that a sports-loving, creative little boy lives here. That is further demonstrated by the super fun Spiderman lamp on the desk. Great design doesn’t need to be sterile!

Storage, But Make it Stunning

Kids love to collect things, but let’s be honest — storage in children’s rooms isn’t always the most attractive. To solve that, Demetri chose a warm wood-toned Billy bookcase set to showcase and organize all of his beloved LEGO creations. My original design had this bookcase in white, but I think the wood was the right choice. Way to go, Demetri! If you’ve ever had a LEGO kid, you know how important it is to give those masterpieces a proper home where they can be displayed with pride instead of getting lost under the bed or scattered across the floor. This solution not only keeps the room tidy but also incorporates his collections into the décor.

Beautiful Bedding

We all know how important comfortable bedding is, so there’s no reason to settle for the itchy, low-quality stuff! For Demetri’s room, I chose this Pottery Barn bedding, which is not only super soft and cozy but also durable enough to stand up to daily use. Plus, it has a touch of sophistication that elevates the room’s overall design while still being kid-friendly — the perfect combination of comfort and style.

Let’s Keep it Real

I just have to point out these two little baskets of stuffed toys — they’re a perfect reminder that your designer boys bedroom makeover can be both refined and well-designed, while still feeling cute and collected. I love the playful, personal details that make it truly feel like home for a child.

In the picture below, notice the blue rag rug. It’s really lovely in person and anchors the bed to the ground amid a sea of tan carpet.

Furniture That Lasts

The furniture in this room is from West Elm, and while it’s definitely a bit of a splurge, it’s an investment that’s built to last. We purchased the bed, dresser, nightstands, and desk from West Elm and the pieces look beautiful together!

With proper care, these pieces will not only hold up to the wear and tear of childhood but will also be something Demetri can take with him when he eventually flies the nest. Choosing quality furniture means the room can grow with him, combining style, durability, and longevity — proving that sometimes spending a little more upfront is worth it for pieces that truly stand the test of time.
