Arden’s DIY Tea Party Birthday

I can’t believe Arden is already 7 years old! I knew I wanted to make the day truly special for her. Renting a party space can feel overwhelming—and pricey—so I decided to bring the celebration home instead. Arden had her heart set on a whimsical tea party, and I couldn’t wait to make it happen. With some delicious homemade foods and a few charming finds from my favorite thrift stores, we created the perfect DIY tea party birthday that was just as sweet and memorable as she had imagined.

Start with Adorable Printables

The first thing I did was hop into Canva and design a little logo for Arden’s party. It was such a fun touch, and it also helped me set the color scheme for the whole celebration. If you’re not already using Canva, I highly recommend it. You don’t need to be a designer. The platform has amazing templates for everything from party invitations to business presentations.

To make the party feel extra special, we designed a personalized menu and place cards for each person. incorporating the same design theme as the invitations and logo. It was a small detail, but it really helped bring the whole tea house vibe to life—like stepping into a charming café made just for the kids.

The best part is that tea party food is wonderfully simple, which makes it perfect for a children’s celebration. Finger sandwiches, bite-sized treats, and easy sweets look so elegant when styled on tiered trays, yet they’re quick to put together and kid-approved. With just a bit of presentation, the simplest foods became part of the magic.

Next the Perfect Table Scape

I bought a bunch of my daughter’s favorite pre-made treats, fresh fruit, and made simple tea sandwiches. I think most kids prefer food like this to an ornate meal.

Over the years, I have collected several tiered trays and white and gold china, which worked perfectly for this DIY tea party birthday. They make everything feel special and a little fancy!

Speaking of fancy…check out the sequined tablecloth I found! I love that it’s white because it’s both glittery, but subtle. The tablecloth and the adorable white gloves at each place setting are two of the only items I purchased new for the party, and they were well worth the investment.

One of the items I always look for at thrift stores is matching tea settings. I can’t tell you how much these girls love sipping out of fancy tea cups. And because I got them at the thrift store, I’m never worried about them breaking.

Finally, the Stunning Room Decor

If anyone ever asks what I do for fun, my answer is always the same: thrifting. I love the thrill of a great deal, but even more than that, I love discovering something secondhand and giving it new life.

Vases are one of the easiest treasures to find while thrifting—they come in every shape, size, and style imaginable. Paired with a few simple grocery store flowers, they instantly transform into beautiful party décor. It’s a quick and budget-friendly way to make a big statement. For Arden’s tea party, the bright pink blooms were the perfect finishing touch, adding just the right pop of color to our DIY celebration.

The Prettiest View

I’ve learned that we don’t need to overthink birthdays—especially at this age. Kids are simply happy to be together, and they have a way of making just about anything fun. Arden’s tea party was proof that the magic isn’t in elaborate venues or pricey décor, but in the joy of celebrating with friends. My hope is that this inspires other parents to keep it simple, get creative, and maybe even take a stroll through their local thrift store before hosting their own DIY tea party birthday.

You can create a DIY tea party birthday of your own! Just remember, before you shop new, check out your local thrift stores. There are so many treasures to be found!
